Wholesale Trade

Much of wholesale trade in India is still in the unorganized sector. The growth of private sector banks has increased the reach of banking services to the unorganized sector in general and in particular to the wholesale trade business. Wholesale trade has a strong presence in districts that are production centres for both agricultural and manufacturing goods and in important logistically convenient districts.

Wholesale trade - Amount outstanding
This map shows the amount outstanding in a district under credit for wholesale trade, as on March 31, 2007.

The map depicts strong presence in districts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Kerala ranking high. These are top manufacturing centres (Pune, Jaipur), agricultural produce such as spices, vegetables, cereals (Madurai, Kanniyakumari, Palaghat) and some districts with a mix of both (Coimbatore).

Wholesale trade - number of accounts
This map shows the number of accounts in a district under credit for wholesale trade, as on March 31, 2007.

The map reveals a strong activity in the south, west and more interestingly in Uttar Pradesh; while the south, and western states have high ranking both in the number of accounts and amount outstanding, Uttar Pradesh maintains high rank only in the number of accounts and not in amount outstanding.
