Transport Operators
The Indian economy has a large dependence on transport, particularly road transport. Though the railways have a large network in terms of reach and are also cheaper, producers depend largely on the road network for transport of their goods to their customers. Truck finance, finance of tourist cars and vans, private buses, shipping, ferry boats are some of the major categories of finance under this head.
Transport operators - Amount outstanding
This map shows the amount outstanding in a district under credit for transport operators, as on March 31, 2007.
The map shows that the organized credit to this sector is strong in the south and west, the major centers of production - both agriculture and manufactured products, tourism (Kerala, Karnataka and part of Tamil Nadu), and districts with high economic activity employing people who move daily.
Transport operators - number of accounts
This map shows the number of accounts in a district under credit for transport operators, as on March 31, 2007.
The districts with higher number of accounts are also highly concentrated in the south and west. In contrast, though the districts along the Gangetic plains (UP, Bihar) do produce significant volumes of agricultural commodities, the marketable surplus is much lower and hence the transportation from these places is also lower.
