Mining and Quarrying

Mining and quarrying are important activities taking advantage of available natural resources. Of these, mining is largely under the public sector and quarrying activities are among private players and largely unorganized.

Apart from the economically strong districts such as the metros, districts from backward regions of the state have relatively high ranking, such as Dantewada in Chhattisgarh and Hailakandi of Assam.

Mining and quarrying - number of accounts
This map shows the number of accounts in a district under credit for mining and quarrying, as on March 31, 2007.

Vellore from Tamil Nadu and Kolar from Karnataka are amongst the top non-metro districts in this category. Though there are gold mines in Kolar, the higher number of accounts is in the quarrying business in both these districts. These are also districts that pose challenges in environmental management.
