Manufacturing & Processing

India’s manufacturing and processing sector is now emerging into global standards, leveraging on global pool of technology providers, scientific improvements in process and control management. Organized is a key factor in enhancing productivity growth in the manufacturing sector and achieve efficiencies.

Manufacturing and processing - Amount outstanding
This map shows the amount outstanding in a district under credit for manufacturing and processing, as on March 31, 2007.

It can be seen from the map that the large metros top the list. One interesting case is Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. This district ranks high both in volume of credit as well as number of accounts. This is on account of the presence of large fireworks and printing industry in the district, mostly in the small-scale sector.

The map also shows that the central part of India, across states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Orissa are among the least industrialized in the country.

Manufacturing and processing - number of accounts
This map shows the number of accounts in a district under credit for manufacturing and processing, as on March 31, 2007.

The manufacturing and processing sector provides opportunities for self-employed in the small scale industrial sector in India. The number of accounts in manufacturing is an indicator of the clusters. Processing includes food processing in which the small scale sector plays a large role, catering to small towns. One can observe from the map that the number of accounts is highest in districts with high population base and density, such as districts from West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. The interesting point to note is about West Bengal and Kerala. It is often cited that these are two states with difficult labor conditions and hence do not attract investments. The map depicts that these two states have a high number of accounts in processing and manufacturing - the districts rank high across the state (unlike, say, Maharashtra, where central and eastern parts of the state are backward). But this is not reflected in the map depicting amount outstanding. This is clearly an area of interest for researchers involved in studying business climate.
