Modern agriculture demands timely financial services, including insurance, for productivity improvements and mitigating the myriad risks inherent in this sector. The history of India’s public sector banking system has revolved around the objective of reaching adequate financial services to the farmers even in remote areas. The maps in this category show the current picture in the reach of organized credit from the banking system across India.

This map shows the amount outstanding in a district in agriculture credit, as on March 31, 2007.
The metro cities find themselves in the top in this category in amount outstanding, but quite low in the number of accounts as this is a category where in the metros, a few accounts have a high volume of transaction.
Interesting districts to watch are Coimbatore of Tamil Nadu and Kapurthala of Punjab. While Kapurthala ranks high in Agriculture, it ranks lower in other activities. Coimbatore, on the other hand is a district that has strengths in all activities.

Interestingly all the first six ranks have been taken by districts from Andhra Pradesh. The rest of the districts also have reasonably high ranking, among the top 50. This is reflected in the map. One interesting question then is the reason behind so many suicides in Andhra Pradesh.
